THE ORIGIN
A few years ago, I stumbled across some old shirts belonging to my father. These were shirts he had collected from each continent and every corner of the earth, each with different motives, activities, and slogans. They had a few things in common – they all had a boxy design, were white and imprinted on the back, but most importantly had a story to tell. The rough woven, thick cotton fabric really added to the vintage look. My father used to always say, "been there, done that, got the t-shirt" (which is derived from "been there, done that, got the picture"), and these shirts really embodied that sentiment.
As I grew into these shirts and started wearing them more often, I received a lot of compliments. Ever since, I've been on the lookout for new ones to add to my collection.
That's when the idea for BACKLIJ hit me. I wanted to create shirts that combine simplicity with unique graphics and stories to tell. I wanted to create a brand that spoke to active, adventurous and internationally-minded individuals like myself, who love discovering new places, cultures and activities.
And so, BACKLIJ was born. We design all of our graphics in-house and make sure that all of the information on our shirts is factually true. But we also like to add a touch of humor to our designs.
We hope that our durable clothing will inspire you to discover new places and cultures on your adventures. Our motto, "been there, done that, got the t-shirt," really captures the spirit of exploration and adventure that we strive to embody.
SUSTAINABILITY FACT
One interesting sustainability fact about clothing brands is that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, after the oil industry. Many clothing brands produce their products using harmful chemicals and materials that have negative impacts on the environment and human health. Additionally, the fast fashion industry, which is characterized by the production of cheap, trendy clothes that are quickly discarded, is responsible for a significant amount of waste and pollution. Therefore make impactful memories with your shirt and you’ll never be able to get rid of them ;)
